5 Ways to Get Involved with Tennis as a Family

By Neferteri Plessy, Founder of Single Moms Planet

Tennis is more than just a sport; it’s a gateway to building deeper connections, fostering confidence, and creating lasting memories with your family. As a single mother, I know firsthand the importance of activities that not only nurture our children’s physical well-being but also strengthen the bond between us. That’s why I’m thrilled to share five ways your family can dive into tennis while having fun and building confidence together.

And if you’re local to Los Angeles, we’ve got an exciting opportunity for you! Single Moms Planet, in partnership with UCLA Tennis and Recruiting for Good, is hosting a month-long tennis camp for youth in October. But more on that later—let’s first explore how you can get started with tennis in your family’s routine!

1. Join a Local Tennis Clinic or Camp

Tennis clinics and camps offer a fantastic opportunity for families to bond while learning a new sport together. With experienced coaches guiding the way, both parents and children can participate, regardless of skill level. These clinics are designed to create a supportive and fun environment where everyone can improve their tennis skills, build confidence, and strengthen family connections.

2. Make Tennis a Weekend Family Tradition

Why not make tennis part of your family’s weekend ritual? Heading to the local courts every Sunday is a great way to stay active and connect with your kids. Tennis is a sport that fosters discipline, strategy, and teamwork—skills that your children will carry into other areas of life. Plus, it’s a chance to put away the phones, get outside, and just enjoy each other’s company. We’ve seen firsthand how the Sunday Tennis Camp sessions we’re hosting this October can bring families closer together, and we’d love for you to join us.

3. Create a Friendly Family Tournament

Tennis can be an opportunity for some light-hearted family competition! Organize a mini-tournament in your neighborhood or local park with friends and family. This not only adds a bit of excitement but also teaches your children about sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience. For single parents, it’s a perfect way to build memories and create traditions that last a lifetime.

4. Get the Right Gear Together

There’s something special about gearing up for tennis as a family. You don’t need fancy equipment—just a racket, tennis balls, and comfortable clothing. If you’re attending the Single Moms Planet Tennis Camp, each participant will receive awesome goodies like T-shirts, water bottles, and backpacks to get your family ready for the court. Having the right gear not only builds excitement but also prepares your children to take the sport seriously.

5. Attend a Tennis Event as a Family

Sometimes, the best way to spark a love for a sport is by watching the pros! Attend a local college or pro tennis match or even watch a big tournament on TV with your children. Discuss the techniques you see and cheer for your favorite players together. The experience can inspire your children to pick up a racket themselves. And don’t forget, every Sunday in October Los Angeles based non-profit Single Moms Planet is hosting their annual SMP Tennis Social Club.

Join Us at Single Moms Planet’s Youth Tennis Camp!

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, don’t miss out on this Month-Long Family Tennis Camp this October, in collaboration with UCLA Tennis and Recruiting for Good. The Sunday sessions will take place on October 6, 13, 20 and 27 and will be held at the Griffin Tennis Club, with coaching by UCLA Assistant Head Coach Rance Brown and SMP staff Coach Christopher Danels. This camp will provide youth with a supportive community, boost their confidence, and offer a safe space to learn and grow through tennis.

We’ll cap off the camp with a celebration on October 27, complete with a pizza party to honor all the young players and their families. This is more than just tennis—it’s about fostering resilience, communication, and confidence, all while having fun.

Get Involved with Recruiting for Good

Our event is generously sponsored by Recruiting for Good, a staffing agency that empowers single mothers to advance in the workforce. Through their referral program, every successful hire made from your recommendation supports Single Moms Planet. You’ll even have the opportunity to earn sweet rewards like fine dining, luxury shopping, or VIP tickets as part of their referral initiative. It’s a win-win: you help your community, and you get rewarded for it!

So whether you’re looking for a way to get your kids into tennis, build confidence, or just have some fun as a family, I encourage you to get involved. Tennis is the perfect sport for bonding, learning, and growing together, and our upcoming camp is an excellent place to start. I hope to see you there!
